Samsung Series 5 550P5C Review – Elegance Meets Performance

Samsung is one of the brands that always managed to surprise us with its products, whether we’re talking about TVs, smartphones or, as the current case, laptops. There’s something in the simplicity of their designs that gives them a classy feel and the Samsung Series 5 550P5C we’re reviewing today is no exception.

While its design is fairly simple, with no eye-catching features but a simple combination of black and grey with the brand name printed discretely on the lid, the building materials are of the highest quality, same as the build quality. This laptop does have one aesthetic feature that managed to capture our attention from the first second – its keyboard. It may be a matter of personal tastes but we really liked the contrast gave by the distanced black keys with the grey frame underneath them; seen from above, the laptop’s keyboard looks fairly similar to the one of an Apple MacBook, which is a bit ironic considering the tension between the two companies.

The Samsung Series 5 550P5C packs in some powerful hardware, namely an Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor assisted by 6GB of DDR3 RAM. This combination seems to be a good one as everything we tested on it ran flawlessly. We resumed our tests at casual tasks such as multimedia, web browsing and running various software programs, without testing any games because the lack of a discrete graphics card excludes this laptop from the gaming category. That doesn’t mean its integrated graphics chip, the Intel HD4000, is not capable of running games because it’s a known fact that this GPU model deals quite well with older games; what we’re saying here is that we skipped this section because any serious gamer won’t settle with older games and lower detail settings so an integrated GPU is out of the question.

Still, while gaming is not the strong point of the Intel HD4000, the GPU handled multimedia content perfectly. We tested YouTube videos at their highest possible settings – 1080p, and even opened several videos simultaneously and yet the GPU and the processor weren’t even sweating. We also tested the HDMI output and connected the laptop to a flat screen TV to see a movie and everything went smooth. Speaking of movies, did we mention that the Samsung Series 5 550P5C comes with a 1TB hard drive which should be enough for a vast movie or music collection?

The lack of a discrete graphics card also put its mark on the battery life of the laptop, the Samsung Series 5 550P5C being able to stay alive for up to 5 hours on a single charge, which is not bad at all.

Drawing the line, if gaming is not your main interest and you want a machine that performs well and looks good doing it, the Samsung Series 5 550P5C is definitely worth your attention.
