Optoma HD230X Review – More Than Just Your Average Projector

If you thought projectors are useful only for displaying boring presentations and charts, chances are that you may have been living in a cave for quite some time, because modern projectors can do so much more. The model we’re reviewing today, the Optoma HD230X is in fact a multimedia projector, meaning its speciality is competing with high-end TVs in terms of image quality and, more importantly, image size. That’s right, a projector’s biggest advantage is the gigantic image size, significantly bigger than the capabilities of even the most eccentric TVs out there. To illustrate what we’re talking about, let’s start by saying that the HD230X is capable of projecting images with a diagonal of 80 inches from just 3 meters away. Pretty impressive, right? We think so too, especially if we also take into account the fact that the images are displayed in Full HD 1080p quality.

We dare to say that the images displayed by the HD230X are comparable to the ones you’ll find in a cinema, with the advantage of being still very clear and well-defined even in lighter rooms, thanks to the projector’s high light output2300 ANSI Lumens. This is quite an impressive figure for a projector in this price range, outranking some projectors that are far more expensive. However, a possible downside of the HD230X is the fact that it uses a traditional lamp instead of a LED lamp. It’s a known fact that classical lamps tend to lose their brightness in time and have a shorter lifespan, in this case around 3,000 hours, compared to LED lamps that have constant brightness during their entire lifespan and last around 20,000 hours.

One of the highlights of the Optoma HD230X is the fact that it uses the DLP technology with BriliantColor, resulting in more accurate colour reproduction. We can confirm this, as our tests indicated better colour reproduction, especially when it comes to shades, highly-contrasted scenes or rapidly changing images, making the HD230X a good pick for those who will use it to watch sports or fast-moving action movies.

Installation and operation are easy and quick: plug in a signal source, adjust the zoom and the focus from the ring on the lens and you’re good to go. Since we are speaking of signal sources, it’s worth mentioning that the projector comes with 2 HDMI ports, allowing two independent high-definition signal sources to be connected simultaneously.

Last but not least, the projector comes with a 5 year colour warranty, indicating that the manufacturers are pretty confident when it comes to what the Optoma HD230X can do.
