We have yet another great offer on a Novatech ultrabook. Offered by Novatech.co.uk for £449.99, this 14-inch beast comes with a configuration that would make a lot of bigger laptops jealous; we’re talking about a third generation i5 processor, a decent amount of RAM and a high-speed solid state drive – everything you need for blazing fast computing on the go.

Novatech nFinity N1412 Review – Are Ultrabooks the New ‘Thing’?

Novatech is a brand that, at this point, needs no further introductions; it’s not as renowned as Asus or HP but, given our previous experiences with Novatech products, we can confirm that their products are just as qualitative. Let’s see if the Novatech nFinity N1412 is a make-or-break for this unwritten rule.

Our first encounter with the N1412 revealed a simple machine, slightly thicker than other ultrabooks and painted completely black – not exactly a jaw-dropper. The build quality is the same that we found in other Novatech products, the device feeling very solid.

We were impressed with the very fast boot-up time of the N1412, as the operating system loaded in just a few seconds. A big merit for this goes to the ultra-fast solid state drive, a 120GB Intel 520 unit. It’s not only the fast storage medium that makes this Novatech ultrabook fast, because the machine also hides a powerful Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5-3317 processor under its hood paired with 4GB of RAM, which makes the ultrabook fly through tasks, even when multitasking intensively. We put the machine under normal testing conditions, running several applications simultaneously and we still couldn’t make the processor sweat. Of course, if you really want to take it down you could easily install several virtual machines on it and power all of them simultaneously, but seriously, who needs to do that on an ultrabook?

Unlike the other ultrabook from Novatech we previously reviewed, the N1412 doesn’t come with a discrete graphics card, relying solely on the processor’s integrated Intel HD4000 GPU. Don’t let the term ‘integrated’ fool you because the Ivy Bridge family of GPUs are quite powerful, therefore we didn’t encounter any problems on the graphics side, not even when we hooked the machine to a big-screen TV and boosted up the image all the way up to Full HD 1080p quality.

Let’s focus a bit on the downsides too because, after all, this isn’t a perfect product. A first let-down was the lack of an optical drive, which is somehow understandable since the N1412 belongs to the ultrabook category; still, we’ve seen ultrabooks with optical drives out there too, but maybe we’re just asking for too much. While the lack of an optical drive was not such a big issue, the lack of an Ethernet port was. Ultrabooks are meant to be used mainly to surf the Internet, so having the machine come only with Wi-Fi connectivity was somewhat disappointing because, statistically talking, it only had 50% of the most common Internet connectivity options.

Our final thoughts are that, even though it has its downsides, the Novatech nFinity N1412 is still a powerful machine that’s well-worth its money.
