Novatech nFinity N1406 Review – When Ultrabooks Evolve

In an industry dominated by giants such as Asus, Acer or HP, you may think that a small company stands no chance. You may be right; however, if that small company’s name happens to be Novatech, things are a bit different, because it just so happens that the company has some solid background in the field of IT – 25 years to be precise. Cutting to the chase, today’s highlight is one of Novatech’s top of the line products, the Novatech nFinity N1406 ultrabook.

Novatech understood that its only chance of staying in the game would be to come up with something innovative, something different from what’s already out there, and this is exactly what the nFinity N1406 is all about. The design is the first indicator of Novatech’s experience in the field, the ultrabook being quite presentable, coming with a simple minimalist design that combines a black base with a metallic grey finished lid and palm rest area.

In terms of dimensions, the ultrabook ranks good, being only 24 millimetres thick and weighing only 1.87 kilograms. These specs would not be very impressive if the ultrabook wouldn’t be a real powerhouse. Exactly, this is where Novatech really worked its magic, defying all trends and expectations by squeezing in what may very well be the most powerful configuration you’ll find in an ultrabook in this price range. We’re talking about a 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3517U processor paired with 8 gigabytes of RAM and, the cherry on top, an NVIDIA GT640M discrete graphics card. This turns out to be a successful combo, as new games such as Diablo 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and many others run perfectly at their highest settings, making the Novatech N1406 one of the best portable gaming rigs out there. Speaking of portability, did we mention that this model comes with an additional battery? That’s right, besides that fact that ultrabooks are already renowned for their long-lasting battery life, Novatech took things to extreme by fitting in a second battery. The results are simply amazing: up to 8 hours of intense gaming, wherever you are.

We know what you’re thinking now: there’s no way that this ultrabook can be totally perfect, there’s got to be a catch somewhere. We agree, there are some downsides as well, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. The first potential problem of the N1406 is related to its storage capacity; the ultrabook comes with an 128 GB solid state drive – enough to hold an operating system, some software, a few music albums and maybe even some movies, but definitely not enough to store games. If Novatech would have opted for a larger SSD, the price would have been significantly higher; at the opposite pole, going with a classical mechanical hard drive would have meant lower performance and reduced battery life, so Novatech had to choose between bad, worse or plain catastrophic. Their choice seems to be the right one, as you can overcome this inconvenience by hooking up an external hard drive; opting for a 1-2 TB USB 3.0 drive would allow you to easily extend the storage capacity without a very noticeable performance impact.

The second issue of the Novatech N1406 is its lack of an optical drive. This is because of the second battery that’s fitted in the slot where normally an optical drive would be found. In an attempt to score big at the portability chapter, Novatech considered that a secondary battery would be more appropriate than an optical drive. If they were right or not, it’s up to you to decide. What’s clear, though, is that, overall, the Novatech nFinity N1406 is one awesome piece of hardware – the best you can find in its price range.
