Nikon Coolpix S800C – Android on a Camera? Does It Make Sense?

We’ve had plenty of smart gadgets in for reviews, such as smart phones, smart TVs, but the Nikon Coolpix S800C is the first smart digital camera that gets in our hands. Being the first Android-powered digital camera, we were pretty excited to see it in action and we’re pretty sure you were too.

We’ll start by saying that, at a first glance, the S800C doesn’t seem very different from other Nikon cameras, the only detail that might get your attention being the presence of only 3 buttons on the back instead of the classical 4-direction navigation key and other function buttons found in other camera models. The explanation for the reduced number of buttons is simple – you don’t need them, as the Nikon Coolpix S800C comes with a touchscreen display.

Without doubt, the main attraction of the S800C is its operating system. The camera runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with Wi-Fi connectivity to allow you to access the online platform and download apps, share photos or do pretty much everything else you can do on an Android-powered device. An interesting fact is that Nikon also opted for its proprietary operating system that allows the camera to start quickly and be ready to shoot photos or videos before Android loads, which removes the frustration of long waits that might just have you miss an important scene. However, the S800C reaches its full potential once Android is up and running, with all its adjacent apps. If you thought that Instagram on your phone was awesome, think what the program can do when running on a device that comes with a 10x optical zoom lens and an optical image stabilizer – that’s right, the only limits are the ones of your imagination.

The only downside we could find about this camera is its relatively short battery life, which only managed to last for about 140 shots. This is not an impressive figure at all, but at least the battery is removable so you can easily buy an extra battery and charger and the problem is fixed.

Overall, we were very impressed by the Nikon Coolpix S800C because it managed to show us that you don’t need to have the absolute ultimate technology to get interesting results, but rather find the best combination of features. The hardware specs of the S800C are far from being the best but, combining them with a software platform with a huge potential, such as Android, the results are simply amazing. Judging by what the Nikon Coolpix S800C can do, we have a feeling we’ll see more Android-powered cameras very soon.
