Medion Akoya P6815 Review – Take Your Games With You

Medion might not be the most famous laptop manufacturer out there but it certainly left us with a good impression every time we had a chance to test one of their products. By looking at the specs of the Akoya P6815, we have a feeling that this laptop will be no exception; let’s see if our intuition is correct or not.

The design of the Akoya P6815 is not the most impressive design out there, but it does come with a nice honeycomb texture on the lid and palm-rest area, so we can’t say it’s as dull either. Still, considering the fact that the laptop is quite a powerful gaming machine, we would have loved this aspect to be illustrated with a more aggressive design.

If the design of the Medion Akoya P6815 is not aggressive, the hardware side certainly is, because this laptop is a beast in disguise. At the heart of its configuration we find a third generation Intel Core i7-3630QM processor running at 2.40 GHz that can automatically overclock itself up to 3.4 GHz if more power is required. There are also 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, but we’ll skip right to our favourite part – the video card. Medion opted for a powerful NVIDIA GT650M GPU with 2GB of dedicated memory, a video card that allows the laptop to run games fluently even if you push the detail settings all the way up. In order to see how the card really performs, we tested out a few popular games, the results being quite impressive: Diablo 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Starcraft 2 ran perfectly with all the details set to “ultra-high”, while more demanding games such as Battlefield 3, Dirt Showdown or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim only achieved playable frame rates with details set to “high”, which is still not bad for a laptop.

The Medion Akoya P6815 also managed to impress us with its connectivity side because, well, everything’s there. We’re talking about USB 2.0, USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth – the laptop has it all, with a webcam and a card-reader closing the list.

As we expected, the Medion Akoya P6815 is indeed a powerful and well-equipped machine, being a worthy solution for people that need a solid laptop by their side when they’re on the move. Its sober design doesn’t make it the most attractive laptop, from a gamer’s point of view, but the upside is that, if you’re a business man and you show up at a meeting with this laptop, you won’t look like you’re going to Comic-Con.
