Medion Erazer X7821 Review – Forget About Limits

We’ve always had a weakness for high-end gadgets so when we found out that we were going to have the most powerful Medion laptop available to date in for a spin we felt like kids in the candy store. We looked up information about the Medion Erazer X7821 and with each review we came across we got even more excited – the laptop is a performance beast!

Finally, after a wait that felt like forever the big day finally came and the monster arrived at our test labs. Show time!

Supercars Anyone?

If another Medion gaming laptop we reviewed a while ago left us with the impression that it had its looks inspired from a Lamborghini supercar, we suspect that the Medion Erazer X7821 also borrowed some body parts from a Lamborghini. The laptop’s lid resembles a Lambo’s bonnet very well and the air vents are nearly identical to the ones of the real car so we wouldn’t be very surprised if the laptop would actually transform into the exotic supercar it copies at one point. Leaving the joke aside, this is one of the most imposing laptops we came across so far, indicating right from the first second that it was built to dominate.

Build quality is exceptional, with first-class materials that indicate that you’re dealing with a premium product right from the first touch. The laptop is quite massive, which normally would be considered a downside, but in the case of a gaming laptop, it’s not that bad, as it needs to have an imposing presence. You can’t expect a ‘good old gaming laptop’ to be featherweight, and it’s not like you’re going to use it for a serious gaming session on your lap anyway.

Step on the Accelerator!

Setting the wheels in motion is a configuration that’s simply awesome: Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive + 128GB solid state drive, 17.3-inch Full HD display and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M GPU. As you can see, the X7821 has all the right ingredients for a blazing experience: a powerful processor, lots of memory, SSD for super-fast start-up and, the cherry on top –  a very powerful graphics card.

According to some rumours, the GeForce GTX 680M holds the title of the most powerful mobile graphics card of the moment, while other voices say that the title is actually held by the AMD Radeon HD7970M. Luckily for us, not so long ago we tested a laptop that came with the AMD Radeon HD7970M GPU and had a hardware configuration that was nearly identical to the one of the Erazer X7821 so we felt that it was the right occasion to see for ourselves which one of these GPUs really holds the crown.

We put the Medion Erazer X7821 to the test and ran all the games we ran on the Novatech N1716 and, with few exceptions, the GTX 680M managed to score some extra fps; we were still unable to reach playable frame rates in Metro 2033 with details set to “ultra high” but everything else worked like a charm. The AMD Radeon HD7970M does take the crown when it comes to CAD applications, though, being significantly faster than the GTX 680M.

In terms of operating temperature, noise and power consumption the GTX 680M takes the lead, running cooler, quieter and more power-efficient than its rival.
Putting it all on the balance, if you’re not into CAD and you don’t mind the price difference between the two, the GeForce GTX 680M is the better choice.

Race Results

Just like a supercar, the Medion Erazer X7821 scored exceptional results; from its daring design up to its top notch performance, the Medion Erazer X7821 is a winner at each and every chapter. Everyday tasks such as web browsing are smooth and fast thanks to the powerful hardware and watching movies is a pure pleasure on the 17.3inch Full HD display.

If we were to find some downsides, there are two things we would mention: weight and battery life – two factors which affect the machine’s portability. Weighing 3.8KG and being able to stay alive for around 3.5 hours under normal usage conditions, the Medion Erazer X7821 is more suitable to be used as a desktop replacement rather than a portable device.

Adding it all up, if portability is not your main concern and you’re looking for the ultimate gaming performance, the Medion Erazer X7821 is the answer.
