Medion ERAZER X7819 Review – Attractive, Powerful, Cheap

Medion really hit the jackpot with its ERAZER series, focusing on 3 aspects: looks, performance and price. We reviewed several laptops from the series and all of them seemed to follow the recipe so we doubted that the ERAZER X7819 would be an exception. We knew its price, we knew its specs so we were eager to put it to the test and see if its performance would rise to our expectations.

Performance Analysis

We jumped right to the interesting part and put the laptop on our test bench the minute we got our hands on it; the hardware configuration looked very attractive in theory so we were quite curious to see what the laptop was really capable of. After installing all the latest gaming titles, a serious gaming session followed and, as we expected, the laptop did not disappoint. We tried a dozen of games such as Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed III, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and many others and the results were impressive, each and every game running very smooth with all details set to “high”, which is not bad for a laptop priced well under £1000. Some games such as Diablo III and CoD MW3 even managed to run fluently with everything maxed out, indicating that the GeForce GTX 670MX is one tough graphics card.

We were a bit surprised to find out that the laptop’s display is not capable of Full HD 1080p resolution but rather comes with a native resolution of 1600 by 900 pixels instead. This is by no means a downside but rather a curiosity, as we weren’t able to spot any significant differences when we put it near a laptop with a Full HD display, so unless you are obsessed on having a Full HD 1080p resolution, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Using the laptop for everyday tasks was a pure delight as the Intel Core i7-3630QM processor zips through everything with ease and, even though the laptop lacks a solid state drive, the overall responsiveness is very good, applications and games starting almost instantly.

Usage Experience

Unlike with other laptops, we put the Medion ERAZER X7819 directly to the tests without paying too much attention to its looks. Once our curiosity for tests and benchmarks was satisfied we paid a bit of attention to the aesthetics side. The laptop comes with the same interesting design we found in other laptops in the ERAZER series, with sharp lines and steep angles, yelling “aggressive” with every inch. Build quality is superior and the metallic finish on the lid and palm rest gives it a bit of a sober look, while the illuminated keyboard makes it look a bit futuristic – interesting contrast if you ask us.

The ERAZER X7819 seems to be the a worthy candidate for a desktop replacement, coming with all the connectivity options you may need, including multiple USB 3.0 ports, an eSATA port and 8-channel audio output. On the multimedia segment the laptop is well equipped as well, coming with an integrated webcam, card reader and a pretty neat sound system consisting of two speakers and a subwoofer, which sound surprisingly loud for a pair of laptop speakers.

Portability is not the X7819’s strong point because, at nearly 4KG, the laptop is not the easiest machine to carry around with you all day; on the bright side, we did manage to pull out some decent numbers in terms of battery life – around 5 hours in light usage conditions. However, we tried a bit of gaming, but we could only stay away from a power socket for around 1 hour or so.

Final Thoughts

Our previous experiences with Medion laptops left us with a very good impression but we tried to overlook that aspect in order to remain as unbiased as possible. Still, the ERAZER X7819 immediately showed what it is capable of, easily rising to our expectations. From the tiniest details pertaining to build quality up to the tremendous raw power provided by its high-end hardware, the Medion ERAZER X7819 stands up to its brand, proving once again that Medion knows its way around.

Bottom line is that, if you’re on the hunt for a well-priced high-end gaming laptop, the Medion ERAZER X7819 might be your best bet.
