Medion Erazer X6811 Review – Meet the Little Brother

Not so long ago we had an awesome gaming laptop in for a test drive, the Medion Erazer X6821, and today it’s time for its little brother, the X6811, to show us what it is capable of. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Medion is one of the brands with the highest performance per price ratios out there, easily outscoring brands such as Acer, Asus or HP. We’ve had several Medion laptops in for tests so far, belonging to all categories, but the one we have here with us today belongs to one of our favourite categories – gaming laptops.

The Medion Erazer X6811 belongs to the middle-class gaming laptops, a segment which makes the machine perfect for all your everyday tasks and a little bit more; we’re not talking about the meanest processor out there, a ton of RAM and the ultimate GPU, but rather a combination of hardware that places the laptop in a segment that provides just enough raw power to meet your needs. At the heart of the configuration we find an Intel Core i5-460M, a powerful processor that falls behind its Ivy Bridge counterpart, the i5-3210, with only a few details such as maximum supported memory, memory operating frequency and maximum memory bandwidth. Even though the differences do exist on paper, in real-life usage you won’t notice any significant differences. The laptop comes with 4GB of RAM, half of the maximum supported capacity by this type of processor (as opposed to the i5-3210, which supports a maximum of 32GB).

The most interesting piece of hardware found in this laptop, and our personal favourite of course, is the discrete GPU – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX460M, a GPU that was one of the fiercest GPUs around when it was released, in 2010. To get an idea of what this little monster can do, let us say that it can still outscore many of today’s most commonly found GPUs such as the GT540M, GT555M and even the GT650M. In case you’re still not convinced, here are some numbers we obtained in several games: Starcraft 2 – 30+ fps with all details set to ultra high, Mafia 2 – 30+ fps with ultra high settings, Crysis 2 – playable up to high settings. We think the numbers speak for themselves.

Leaving the hardware side apart, the Medion X6811 is still impressive thanks to its daring design, which is quite similar to the one of its bigger brother, the X6821. The overall aggressiveness was kept but the lines and angles were smoothened down a bit. In terms of everyday usage experience, we found the X6811 to be practical, comfortable and easy to carry around.

From out point of view, the Medion Erazer X6811 is yet another impressive Medion laptop that provides a good bang for your buck.
