Medion Akoya P6631 Review – Mobile Multimedia Centre

After having to deal with so many office laptops and gaming laptops, having a laptop that’s geared towards multimedia enthusiasts is a nice change. We’ll skip right to the point and say that, without doubt, the most impressive feature of the Medion Akoya P6631 is its screen: 15.6” LED-lit Full HD 1080p – a real rarity in laptops. Full HD screens are usually found in 17.3 inch laptops or high-priced 15.6 inch gaming laptops so this is why finding this feature in a laptop that doesn’t belong to either of those categories is a bit of surprise. Long story short, the image quality on the Medion Akoya P6631 is simply stunning, making gaming, working or watching movies significantly more enjoyable experiences.

The Medion Akoya P6631 also surprised us with the presence of a Blu-ray drive. Besides being able to enjoy high-definition content via Blu-ray discs in Full HD quality directly on the laptop’s screen, we were also able to hook up the laptop to a big screen TV via HDMI and enjoy the bigger picture without sacrificing image quality. A big merit for this goes to the powerful graphics card that equips the laptop, the NVIDIA GT540M, which is powerful enough to handle everything in terms of multimedia and even deals well with some games.

For the storage part, Medion opted for a 640GB hard drive, which we found to be an inspired choice considering the fact that high definition content occupies a lot of space. A 1TB hard drive would have been even more appropriate but let’s not forget the price of the laptop, which is more than decent for its specs.

A little let-down of the Medion Akoya P6631 is its processor. Don’t freak out, it’s not as tragic as it sounds, because the Intel Core i5-2410M processor that empowers the laptop is still a powerful processor. An Ivy Bridge version of the i5 would have been better, considering the fact that its integrated graphics chip provides better performance than the one found in the Sandy Bridge i5-2410M, so the results would have been slightly better performance and slightly increased battery life when the laptop switches from the dedicated graphics card to the integrated one. However, the differences are mostly into the numbers, the real-world usage differences being quite insignificant, so Medion’s choice of opting for an older processor in order to keep a lower price is still a good decision. Since we were speaking of battery life, it’s worth mentioning that we managed to achieve 3 hours and 30 minutes of wireless Internet browsing, roughly around 3 hours when a movie was playing and a somewhat disappointing battery life of just 1 hour and 10 minutes under heavy load.
