LG Optimus 4X HD Review – Did the Samsung Galaxy S3 Finally Meet Its Match?

Samsung has leading the mobile phone market for a while with the Galaxy S3 but competition is not sleeping either. We were really looking forward to reviewing a worthy competitor for the S3 and that moment is finally here, so let’s put the Optimus 4X HD under our scope and see if it’s the phone that will put a stop on S3’s domination.

The first thing about the LG Optimus 4X HD that captured our attention is that it’s big, and we’re not just saying this because the phone comes with a 4.7-inch screen – 0.1 inches smaller than S3’s, but because the phone really looks massive. As opposed to Samsung, LG didn’t go with curvy lines but rather a minimalistic look that puts the accent on straight lines, making the phone look very imposing.

Under the hood the Optimus 4X HD houses a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip running at 1.5GHz and 1GB of RAM memory which makes the phone very responsive and fast. In synthetic benchmarks the Samsung S3 does lead the charts, with slightly better scores, but in real-life usage scenarios we noticed absolutely no difference between the two, both being blazing fast at all tasks.

Let’s focus on the key feature a bit – the display. The LG Optimus 4X HD comes with a 4.7 inch IPS HD display that pumps out the same resolution as the S3, namely 1280 x 720 pixels; being slightly smaller, LG’s display has a higher pixel per inch density than the Samsung, measuring up 312 ppi vs S3’s 306. Again, the difference is only in the numbers, because the real-life usage experience is identical. However, the LG reproduces colours a bit more accurately and the viewing angles are better than Samsung’s.

On the software side, both phones share the same operating system, Android 4.0, each with its own modifications. At this chapter the Optimus seems to be better organized and intuitive while the S3 comes with more apps out of the box, making it a bit more user-friendly.

The camera of the LG Optimus 4X HD comes with an 8MP image sensor that allows you to capture impressive photos and record Full HD 1080p video clips; the S3 also comes with the same camera specs but packs in significantly more options such as exposure control, ISO control, white balance and several other features.

Overall, it’s tough to say which phone is better because the race is very tight, one of them being better at one chapter while the other is better at another. There’s no winner and no loser here so, what we’re saying is that whatever you opt for, you’ll be happy with your choice.
