Lenovo Ideapad Z580 Review – Game Wherever You Are

At a first glance, nothing betrays the fact that the Ideapad Z580 is a gaming laptop. Its design doesn’t give you any hints in this direction, the sober look and the exquisite brushed aluminium lid being more specific to a high-end business laptop. However, this is a wolf in a sheep’s clothing because once you look past its innocent design, this laptop is really aggressive. Ensuring the raw power is the powerful Intel Core i7 processor coupled with the large amount of RAM, a combination that makes applications run fluently even under heavy multitasking conditions.

The main attraction of the Z580, however, is its discrete graphics card; the 2 GB NVIDIA a GT630 middle-class video card ensures a smooth gaming experience even in the most demanding games. Don’t expect to play everything maxed out, though, as that’s not something you’re going to do on a laptop priced under £1000. Still, there are plenty of games that the GT630 is capable of running at their highest settings, so the overall gaming experience is quite satisfactory.

Moving on, the large capacity hard drive is another highlight of the Ideapad Z580, providing plenty of storage space for games and multimedia content. However, multimedia is not the laptop’s strong point, despite the large storage capacity and its Blu-ray drive and the reason is simple: the screen fails to impress. You would expect to find a full-HD capable screen in a laptop that targets the gaming segment but unfortunately this is not the case of the Z580. The 15.6” display is only capable of displaying a resolution of 1366 by 768, which might be enough for the general audience but will definitely disappoint the movie enthusiasts and maybe even the gamers. A possible solution is to connect the laptop to a big screen TV via the HDMI port but that won’t help you much when you’re on the road. Still, this is a bit ironic, considering that the Ideapad Z580 comes with an Onekey Theater mode, a feature that automatically optimizes the laptop’s settings for video watching. If only that mode would unlock a full-HD capability in the display…

It seems that the display was the single thing that was overlooked, as everything else in the Z580 performs flawlessly. Lenovo’s renowned AccuType keyboard layout makes the keys easy to find and comfortable to operate, indicating that there’s still an office laptop hidden somewhere within the Ideapad Z580.
