Hitachi L47VG10 Review

The Hitachi L47VG10 is not designed to be the most attractive flat screen TV you’ve seen, maybe not even the most equipped, but it is definitely one of the biggest TVs in this price range. After all, size is the most important when talking about TVs and this one has plenty of it – 47 inches to be precise.

Size is not the only plus of the L47VG10. Its immense 47” display uses LED Edge-lighting technology for a more uniform lighting and to save power. This makes Full HD 1080p or 3D content look more realistic and the colours more vibrant than the ones displayed on a classical CCFL-lit display. The 3D technology used by this Hitachi TV is passive technology; the TV even comes with 4 pairs of 3D glasses included, allowing you to enjoy 3D content right away. Unfortunately a 2D to 3D converter is not present so you’ll be limited to 3D content that was specifically recorded to be viewed in 3D.

The sound of the Hitachi L47VG10 is decent but not impressive. The two 8W speakers will pump out enough volume to allow you to watch the news or sports but don’t expect to feel the explosions in a movie because that’s not going to happen unless you hook up a bigger sound system, which is quite easy to do thanks to the coaxial digital audio output.

The connectivity options are just the regular options you would expect to find in a budget flat screen TV: 3 HDMI ports, 2 SCART sockets, component and composite connectors and a 15-pin D-sub input for PCs. An USB port is also present but if can only used for viewing photos, which is not very useful but still good to have.

A serious downside of this TV is the lack of Internet connectivity. Watching Internet movie clips or catching up with your friends’ activity on the social networks would have been awesome on the huge 47” display but that’s something you will have to forget about in this case. Hitachi’s decision not to include Internet connectivity in the L47VG10 is understandable from a financial angle – adding Internet support would have had a significant impact on the price of the TV, bumping it into a completely different price range – a price range with a lot of powerful competitors. Overall, Hitachi played it smart regarding this feature, making the TV available to a much larger public by keeping a lower price. A Freeview tuner is present, though, so you’re not left without any content to enjoy.
